Conquer Your Fears Quickly and Easily with Safe, Effective, Results-Based Hypnotherapy

It isn't easy living with a fear or phobia.

In fact, sometimes it can be embarrassing, dejecting or even debilitating. And while a part of you wants nothing more than to just "get over it," you know that the solution is not so simple. That's because fears and phobias are not based on logic and rational thought. Instead, they are driven entirely by the most powerful emotions you can experience.

But what if you didn't have to live with your fear or phobia any longer? What if there was a fast, easy and highly-effective way to overcome your fears permanently?

Hypnosis can provide potent, lasting relief from phobias ranging from commonplace to obscure, from mild to severe. And there is absolutely no drug or shock therapy involved. Instead, hypnosis uses unique relaxation techniques to target the very source of your phobia... and eliminate it.

You Came into This World Naked, Screaming—and Fearless

You were born with only two instinctual fears: a fear of falling and a fear of loud unknown noises, both vital to your survival. All other fears are either acquired through direct experience or learned from somebody else, such as a parent. An over-active imagination is often responsible for exacerbating fears, snatching hold of an idea you are exposed to (in a movie, for example) and then exaggerating the concept from a fictitious context to something that feels potentially real. When you develop fears from experience, it is because at the time you held misconceptions that you no longer believe today. For example, at the time you may have thought, "Oh no! I'm going to die!" As a result, your subconscious made a link between your experience and death. Of course, that was a misconception—you obviously didn’t die. Today, your fear is your subconscious responding to this misconception. The role of hypnosis is to bridge the gap between the misconception in your subconscious and your understanding in your conscious mind.

How to Stay Calm by Staying in the Moment

The crucial element to remember is that the fear response is not to what lies in front of you but what you imagine it to be. To illustrate this, let's focus on the real-life case of S.A., a student who came to the Morpheus Clinic in 2008 to seek relief from his extreme fear of cockroaches. He was about to embark on a vacation to Bangladesh, where cockroaches frequent the insides of residential houses and are significantly larger than their North American counterparts, and was understandably worried as to how he was going to handle the situation.

Now, if S.A. had seen a cockroach for what it actually was, he would not be afraid. After all, while they may be unsightly to everyone except their own mothers, cockroaches are relatively harmless. They mind their own business; sticking to the shadows and avoiding human contact whenever possible. However, S.A.'s idea of a cockroach was obviously quite different. Perhaps he imagined that cockroaches were actively aggressive. If that's the case, then his reaction towards them would be completely justified. His mother also harboured an animosity towards the insects, so it's plausible that he adopted his feelings from her. In any case, S.A. is visible proof that those who suffer phobias see and react to an idea beyond what is actually there.

The key to overcoming this is to remain focused on the present moment. If S.A. concentrated on a "what-if" based future ("what if that cockroach comes over to me and bites me?") then it is natural for him to become afraid. However, if he kept his mind in the present ("that cockroach is running away from me") he would see that his is safe in the current situation.

The ONLY Reason Your Mind Has Been Stubbornly Holding on to Fear—And What to Do About It

In a way, fear is a good intention gone wrong. The original purpose of fear is to protect you from physical or emotional pain. But in the case of a phobia or other irrational fear, the intention is misinformed and has a faulty trigger, like a fire alarm going off because of birthday candles. The paradox is that fear occurs because it is trying to motivate you to change your situation in order to feel safe. Hypnosis utilises these positive intentions to enable that feeling of security without experiencing the fear.

Naturally, fear instigates a fight-or-flight reaction. However, these are not your only options. There are methods of taking the adrenalin that is the result of fear and using it as a positive force to boost your performance. For example, a rock climber uses the adrenalin to push himself physically and perform better on the mountain. Of course, since rock climbing is pleasurable activity, he would relabel this fear as excitement. But it is important to note that fear and excitement share many of the same characteristics. Both result in heightened awareness, energy, rapid breathing, an increased heart rate and sweating. Through hypnotherapy, it is possible to learn techniques to change that fear into excitement that will become beneficial to completing the task.

Fears Can Strike—AND VANISH—Like Lightning

Many people believe that, because they’ve suffered from the phobia for so long (in some instances, since early childhood), it will be difficult to break free of it. However, take into consideration how quickly those fears developed in the first place. Often it was due to a single experience. In only a few minutes, your perception can change dramatically. This demonstrates that not only is a person capable of learning something perfectly after only one experience, but also that this experience can take place over an extremely short period of time. And this is the exact principle that hypnotherapy employs to reverse the process. S.A. had been terrified of cockroaches for as long as he could remember, but after only one session at Morpheus he witnessed a drastic improvement. Below is an account of his experience, in his own words:

Just thought I'd write you an update on how I'm doing now that I've spent a few weeks in Bangladesh. Thanks for being able to see me on short notice before I left - and sorry I was never able to see you for a follow up as I'd hoped before I left. I have to say that I'm blown away - I never thought hypnotherapy would work that well in treating my cockroach phobia. When I first came to Bangladesh - I had that creepy crawly feeling I was telling you about. Every brush against my leg I wanted to double check to see if it was a cockroach. Things only improved - oddly enough - when I actually saw my first cockroach.

I was in the middle of eating breakfast when one dropped out of nowhere. Literally - they were silent as ever so the only sound it made was the soft thud as it hit the ground about a meter away from me. The cockroaches were just as big as I had described - this one was three inches long and about an inch wide. And, since it had flown in, it was clearly the kind that had wings. As luck would have it - I was also holding boiling hot tea at the time.

This was exactly the kind of situation I was worried about. Where I might see a cockroach and react in a way that might injure myself (such as dropping the hot tea and breaking the glass it was in). But, thanks to you, although my hand trembled - I was pretty calm. In fact, I would have to say I was more apprehensive during our "theatre visualization" in your office than I was at the site of an actual cockroach. Not only did I not freak out - I actually tried to kill it. But it was too fast and got away. Guess some things will never change.

Since then I've had a few opportunities to be near equally large and fast cockroaches. One was near my foot as I walked by a car (again I didn't freak out). The other was just a few minutes ago. I was near the fridge grabbing a late night snack when in the corner of my eye, I saw a moving shadow. I turned to look and there was a cockroach on a spot of the counter where I was working just a minute ago - its antennas moving and all. Before I could move to kill it - it had moved into the shadows and was gone. Who needs ninjas when there are cockroaches?

The biggest problem now - although its by no means as severe as it was before your help - is dealing with the urge to freak out when something brushes against my leg or thigh. Writing this email with the fan blowing against my arms and legs is a good example.

I want you to know you have a satisfied client - it was definitely money well spent. The icing on the cake would have to be seeing my mom (who was the staunchest opponent of hypnotherapy) freak out at a site of a cockroach while I stay steady and calm right next to her.

— S.A., Student, Toronto

How Hypnosis Helps You Overcome Your Fears

There are two different parts that collaborate to make up your mind: your conscious and your subconscious. Your conscious is responsible for what which you are aware of doing, such as playing chess or deciding an outfit to wear in the morning. Contrarily, your subconscious is responsible for that which you do automatically, such as circulating your blood or isolating a friend's voice from the background noise of a busy room in order to carry a conversation. Both your conscious and your subconscious observe, absorb and draw conclusions that form into beliefs. The difference is that, while you are aware of your conscious beliefs, you have no access to your subconscious beliefs. If your phobia was in your conscious mind, you would be able to rationalize it and eliminate the fear. For instance, imagine that you hear a noise in the middle of the night and suddenly become afraid. Then, you realise that it is only a raccoon outside and your fear disappears. However, because your phobia is in your subconscious, you are unable to eradicate it with logical reasoning.

Using deep relaxation techniques, hypnosis gains access to your subconscious mind and is able to uncover the root of your phobia. From there, your phobia can be terminated using motivational suggestion. It is important to remember that hypnosis is not "mind control". While you are very relaxed during the sessions, you remain completely aware of your surroundings the entire time. You hear and understand everything that the hypnotherapist says as well as if you had been having the conversation in any other setting. This means that it is impossible for the hypnotherapist to "plant" ideas in your head that you are unaware of or that you do not want. As a result, hypnosis is one hundred percent safe.
